The Soft Matter Laboratory Probing matter from the microscopic to the mesoscopic

Our lab exploits the fundamental interaction of all matter with electromagnetic fields in order to probe the workings of nature.  We observe dynamic processes that happen in time scales of 100s of femtoseconds to even days or weeks.  This is the equivalent of watching molecular interactions (femtosecond durations) and the slow drip of a stained glass window (months) at the same time

A few of our current projects are:

  • Structure and non-exponential dynamics in glass forming systems

Photonic Devices Lab

Current research areas include:

  • Waveguide devices for wavelength/mode filters

  • 3D printing of nanophotonic structures on fiber

  • On-chip MEMS waveguide switches

  • Nanoparticles dispersed within waveguides

  • Optical fiber and wavelength switches

  • All-optical ultrafast information processing

Ultrafast laser lab

Currently we have the following research projects:

  • The generation of intense high harmonic (HHG) source

  • Development of few cycles infrared laser (2-3 micrometer)

  • Few cycles OPA and OPCPA

  • Resonance high harmonic generation.

  • Sub femtosecond inner shell dynamic excitations

Quantum Information, Simulation and Sensing

Our research focuses on addressing and manipulating isolated quantum systems, with the following goals:

  • Studying fundamental quantum physics and quantum information science

  • Using them as building blocks for quantum computing and quantum simulation of many-body systems

  • Devising novel, sensitive nanoscale sensors
